Elimination of media specialists' jobs

Dear colleagues:
It has come to MDMSA’s attention that the position of media specialist is in danger of being eliminated.  In its place, media centers would be staffed by a clerk.  This is not a “maybe” situation.  It is being discussed by a committee which will soon make recommendations to the School Board.  At this moment, if our voices are not heard in opposition, it has a good possibility of passing.  This is not so much a Tallahassee directive as a district matter.  When I heard about this I was told “If you have an organization, they may have the greatest influence.”  We do have an organization, but we must be proactive.  All MDMSA members (or even if you have not yet joined) MUST write, email and call each of the School Board members this coming week asking them to reject any proposal that encourages the elimination of certified media specialists.  This is not for the sake of MDMSA but for the sake of your job.  Blogs will follow this one soon with a form letter to be printed out, an email message, and a phone script.  They will all be short and to the point.  They will also include where to direct the letters, emails and the phone numbers.  If you have parents who do not want to see your media program destroyed, encourage them to show their support and to notify the school board members with their objections and concerns.
